One and Two-week Courses

One and two-week courses are designed to give novices and those with some skills the opportunity to take part in a remarkable working experience and gain an insight into the work of an archaeologist.


The 2010 Dates!

The training dig will concentrate on investigating Roman, Viking and medieval archaeology at the eastern extent  of the site.

Spring dates: 12th - 23rd April

  • Accommodation is not available during the Spring training season

Summer dates: 28th June - 17th September

  • If you wish to do longer than a two week couse please get in touch and arrangements can be made


1 week course

The one-week course will include on the first day introductory talks about the site, excavation techniques and health and safety, and a site tour. Subsequent days will include hands-on experience of excavation work; time will be divided equally between three tasks:

  • Basic digging techniques: trowelling, mattocking, shovelling etc.

  • Site recording: planning, levelling, section drawing and context description.

  • Finds processing: washing, sorting and environmental sample processing.


One-hour seminars by specialists from York Archaeological Trust on topics such as archaeological conservation, artefacts and pottery will take place on most days. An evening walking tour of the archaeology of York will be included.


2 week course

The two-week course will include on the first day introductory talks about the site, excavation techniques and health and safety, and a site tour. Subsequent days will include hands-on experience of excavation work; time will be divided equally between three tasks:

  • Basic digging techniques: trowelling, mattocking, shovelling etc.

  • Site recording: planning, levelling, section drawing and context description

  • Finds processing: washing, sorting and environmental sample processing.


One-hour seminars by specialists from York Archaeological Trust on topics such as stratigraphic analysis, archaeological conservation, artefacts and pottery will take place on most days.


An evening walking tour of the archaeology of York and a tour of York Archaeological Trust's Conservation Laboratory will be included. Saturday and Sunday will be free days which will allow participants to explore York and its surroundings for themselves.
