Hungate Oral History

print

'Rich in all but money' is the first in a series of oral history booklets published by York Archaeological Trust and is a revised version of the book that was first published ten years ago.

The book offers a unique collection of personal reflections and memories from Hungate residents from the early part of the twentieth century, celebrating the past as a new stage in its history begins.

Author Van Wilson says, "The book illustrates the life of real men and women who lived in the Hungate area, many in appalling living conditions, through a time of radical change and highlights the incredible resilience and spirit of the Hungate community."

It details all aspects of life in Hungate from the housing, schooling, industry and the workplace, leisure pursuits, health, poverty and the community spirit, giving a comprehensive representation of typical life in the area.

Van adds, "Combining the finds that the excavation work has uncovered with the memories contained within this book gives us a very clear picture of what life was like, and really helps bring the history of Hungate to life".
